Bio: Dr. Vyfhuis is experienced in treating all types of cancers and has particular interests in lung cancer, breast cancer, gynecologic cancer, gastrointestinal cancer and sarcomas. She also specializes in palliative care radiation oncology. She is specially trained in many radiation therapies, including Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Brachytherapy and Proton Therapy. She has over 30 peer-reviewed publications and has given various national presentations. She has also received several grants and awards pertaining to her clinical research. Currently, her clinical research focuses on cancer inequities, with a particular focus in developing practical clinical strategies to address nutrition insecurity in cancer patients residing in food deserts. She has recently published on the effects of food deserts on cancer outcomes, which was funded through an institutional grant. In collaboration with the UMGCCC nutritionists and our clinical research staff, she is currently designing a pilot study to address the nutritional needs of these vulnerable groups. Dr. Vyfhuis received her post-graduate doctorate and medical degrees from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She went on to complete an internship in internal medicine and her radiation oncology residency at University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Vyfhuis is chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee in the Department of Radiation Oncology, an active member of ASTRO’s Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (HEDI) Council, and has recently joined the NRG Oncology Health Disparities Committee, focusing on research concept development.
