The Benefits of Captive Insurance Companies

November 7, 2013 at 8:30AM - 10:30AM

Location

Springfield Country Club

8301 Old Keene Mill Rd.
Springfield, VA 22152

http://www.sgccva.org/

Description

Captive Insurance Companies are a powerful tool for small business owners to capitalize on Internal Revenue Code (the “IRC”) Section 831 (b) allowing them to deduct annual insurance premiums up to $1.2 Million against business operating income. These premiums can purchase additional coverage on traditional insurance, or can be used for policies covering often unavailable or cost-prohibitive policies from conventional companies. The premiums of the Captive are not assessed income tax if the proper elections are made, thereby resulting in an immediate tax deferral of the premiums received. If available, distributions made by the Captive to its owners are treated as qualified dividends and any proceeds paid to the Captive owners from a liquidation of the Captive will be treated as long-term capital gains. Captive insurance companies can potentially offer significant tax advantages and if used properly can provide for estate planning, asset protection and business succession benefits.

What are the benefits of Captive Insurance Companies?
   • Enhanced Estate planning, Asset Protection and Business Succession opportunities
   • Potentially Reduced Insurance Costs
   • Improved Cash Flow
   • Expanded Insurance Coverage
   • Improved Risk Management and Profitability
   • Potential write off of up to $1.2 Million in premiums*
   • Potential for distribution of captive company assets on a favorable basis*

Who Should Consider a Captive? Companies That……
   • Are Privately held and in mature stage of business cycle
   • Currently have insurance policies with good claim and loss history
   • Could benefit from enhanced insurance protection
   • Have stable cash flow with ability to reposition $400K – $1.2M per year
   • Have owners in the highest tax bracket

Please RSVP by Tuesday November 5th

HIPAA compliance can be a major source of stress. The potential risks to your business are enormous but at the same time it is difficult to define exactly what you need to do so that your practice is "HIPAA Compliant." With the release earlier this year of the final regulations implementing key portions of the HITECH Act, now is the time to hear how to simply yet thoroughly achieve compliance.

In this seminar we’ll help you get more beauty sleep by explaining HIPAA requirements in clear terms and then providing specific “How to” advice as well as tools to help implement a documented, repeatable HIPAA process for your practice.

Speaker

Mark S. Sulkowski, MD
Professor of Medicine
Medical Direcotr - Viral Hepatitis Center
John Hopkins University - Baltimore, MD

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of gastroenterologists, hepatologists, infectious disease specialists, and other health care practitioners who are involved in the treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

Program Description

Effective management of hepatitis C virus (HCV) continues to pose a challenge for health care practitioners.  The discovery, development, and availability of direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) offers new treatment options and the possibility of improved outcomes for newly diagnosed patients as well as those who have experienced a relapse or failed to respond to previous treatment; however, their use introduces new challenges and adds to the complexity of HCV treatment and care.

Additionally, as the field rapidly moves forward and additional agents offer promise for improvements in outcomes, treatment durations, and AE impact, clinicians must be informed of evolving data in order to appropriately counsel patients who may wish to discuss the benefits and risks of initiating therapy now vs. delaying treatment.

The purpose of this unique HCV NOVA initiative is to provide specific, targeted educational opportunities for clinicians who are involved in the management of patients with HCV. The NOVA meetings will incorporate a case-based approach to present the most current data on the following topics:

   * Screening for HCV – new recommendations
   * Identifying optimal candidates for triple therapy: treat now or wait?
   * Refining best practices in HCV care
   * Evaluating emerging data on novel treatment approaches
   * Subtle ways to diagnose cirrhosis without a biopsy
   * Things not to forget in a patient who has cirrhosis
   * Novel triple-and quad-therapy approaches
   * Learning Goal/Purpose
   * To present the most current data on HCV management of both treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced patients, identify optimal candidates for immediate vs. deferred therapy and evaluate emerging data on novel treatment approaches.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the program, participants should be better able to:

   * Describe the value of treatment to positively effect long-term outcomes and to identify optimal candidates for immediate versus deferred therapy in anticipation of new DAAs
   * Evaluate the potential impact of currently approved and DAAs in Phase III on HCV treatment decision making and clinical outcomes
   * CME/CE Credit (1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits)
   * Accreditation Statement

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and Consensus Medical Communications. Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

August 7, 2012

Dear Fellow Physicians, Private Practitioners, and Administrators:

Have you had enough yet of insurance companies, hospitals, government politicians, and other non-physicians intruding on the decisions you make for your patients and your practice?

Are you tired of doing everything right-playing by the book, making updates, providing state-of-the-art care to your patients-only to go broke doing it, because the upgrades cost you a fortune, and reimbursements are not going up to compensate for the upgrades?

This kind of pressure and interference is pushing independent physicians to the brink of extinction.

I'm Kevin Fickenscher, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). And if, like me, you're deeply concerned about uninformed people who don't understand medicine interfering with you, your patients, and your practice-you're not alone.

That's why I decided to take action and chair the Physician Practice Survival Conference-an interactive two-day event that brings together some of the most influential and brilliant minds in healthcare right now.

The Physician Practice Survival Conference has solutions for you, if you want to:

•Maintain your private practice—and your independence
•Increase your compensation for the care you provide
•Create a market value for your practice-and learn what you can do with a highly-valued practice
•Focus on providing your patients with quality preventive and acute care-not on getting paid
•Reintroduce yourself to your family and have more personal time off

EVENT DELAYED - Strategic Planning For Implementation of ICD-10-CM

Location

7927 Jones Branch Drive, Suite 3150
McLean, VA 22102

Description

Update - Delay of Event

Event has been postponed.  Date and information to be announced.

ICD10 CM/PCS delay may be necessary, but CMS is committed to implementing this coding system.

At the AHIMA Summit, CMS acting deputy director of the Office of E-Health Standards and Services, Denise Buenning, MsM, explained why a delay and official implementation of the code set is essential for the healthcare industry.

AHIMA leaders state that regardless of the delay time, the worst thing you can do is to stop ICD-10 implementation, “Follow our lead and stay the course. Don’t lose momentum; use the extra time, it is a gift to get this right,” she said. “ICD-10 is going to happen.”

As quoted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Robert E. Nolan Company performed a study on challenges of ICD-10 implementation and estimated that each full time coder will need up to 40 hours of ICD-10 training. Physicians and other clinicians will need additional training, ranging between 12 and 80 hours each.

This workshop will cover strategic steps to begin the journey to ICD10CM conversion. Areas to be covered include: Implementation Plan Development, Impact Assessment, Organizational Impact, Evaluation of Operational Processes and System Changes, Implementation Budget, and Contingency Plan.

Speaker:

Susanne Talebian, CHBC, CPC, CCS-P, RMM, CMOM, PCS, CUA is an AHIMA Certified Trainer of ICD10 CM/PCS

Using Technology to Position Your Practice for the Future

Healthcare as we know is changing. With costs rising at a rapid rate, all aspects of our current system are under review by regulators and payors alike. No one has a crystal ball, but some trends are emerging that indicate how care delivery will change in the future. Many of these trends are predicated on the fact that providers will be using IT to document, record and exchange medical records. At this seminar we will review the reform landscape, including the pending Supreme Court case and Meaningful Use Stage 2, and suggest how to position your practice for the future. Note that it is expected that the pending Supreme Court decision will be announced by the date of the seminar and we will include reflections on the decision in the presentation.

Speaker:

Maureen West McCarthy of Medical Business Advisors and Snyder Cohn will discuss healthcare reform

Jonathan Krasner of BEI will discuss reform-related IT issues
